Cancer cell dies not because of cytotoxic chemicals, but of a tiny shift in the mitochondria. The main role of the mitochondria is to produce energy. When ceramide begins to accumulate, thereby it starts to increase the pore permeability of the mitochondrial membrane to cytochrome C. As a result, cytochrome C gets pushed out of the mitochondria.
Ceramide can cause genotoxic stress on the cancer cell nucleus, thereby generating a protein p53. The job of this protein is to distort metabolism of calcium in the mitochondria. Ceramide also distorts the cellular lysosome, the digestive system of the cells. It actively stops the pro-survival pathways of the cells, leaving no chance for survival of the cancer cells.
CBD and THC are biomimetic to anandamide. So during stress or injury, when the body demands more than that can be produced by the body, the mimetic endocannabinoids gets activated. Hence, during cancer when the treatment requires the need of sustained pressure of the modulating agent on the homeostatic systems.
Basically, THC moves to the CB2 receptors in the spleen which is the immune system. The immune system then destroys the cancer cells. However, THC and CBD can directly attack the cancer cells by stopping the growth of the tumor.
