Safe driving strategies – Low Vision
All drivers find themselves in some driving situations that are risky. Here are some strategies that can be used to reduce the risk:
Strategies to reduce the effects of a vision impairment on driving
-
Have your vision tested regularly by an eye care specialist
-
Limit your driving in conditions that make it difficult to see, for example at dusk, in the fog, during poor weather, or at night
-
Choose a vehicle that provides good sight lines; one with side and rear windows that are large
-
Choose a vehicle with a dashboard that is easy to read; increase the lighting on the dashboard if possible
-
Keep windows and mirrors clean
-
Try to drive on well-lit streets at night
-
Learn to rotate your head and shoulders to be sure that you are checking your blind spot properly
-
Plan your trip and take frequent breaks to avoid becoming over tired
-
Remember to stay alert and check for other cars or pedestrians when approaching an intersection
-
Avoid looking directly at on-coming traffic if you are bothered by headlights at night; look just off to the side
-
Leave enough distance between you and other cars so you can react in time if another car comes to a sudden stop
-
Adjust mirrors to make sure you can see outside the vehicle properly
-
A visor extension may help to reduce the effects of glare
-
An occupational therapist or a certified driver rehabilitation specialist can evaluate your driving, develop programs to improve safe driving or recommend technology to assist your driving
